Penguin Power Sponge Filter Just NOT Working...?

I've had the blasted thing for a week, paid a pretty penny for it too... I noticed it had shorted a few times today, so I made sure it was plugged in right, and it was... So I figured it'd just stop, or whatever. I was drifting in and out of sleep when I noticed, so yeah, don't start yelling at me for it. Either way, it's now completely dead, I've tried plugging it elsewhere, even in outlets which work for damn sure, and nothing. So I've unplugged it. I have two filters in at the moment, the Penguin and a Cascade internal. I got the Penguin because the Cascade appears to be on it's last leg [it's had a few good years]. As of now it is all that's running filter wise. The tank is a 29g breeder, with three pea angels, a bumble goby, three corys, a guppy pair, a dojo loach, and a banjo catfish. It's a bit late to be making calls, so I figured there might be a few fishy folks online that've had similar issues, and might be able to help. Post what you can, I have not checked the tank yet [hands in the tank=last resort]... so yeah, can you guys list possible issues and remedies? If there is no way around going in the tank, I'll do it... I just want to know if it's fixable since I did pay alot for it, and it's still new. If all else fails, I'll return it.
